Pendants BeadsMamarua NZ Jewellery Uses Discarded Materials To Create Unique Items
Well Mamarua NZ Jewellery all started as merely a dabble, truly 1 or 2 disjointed thoughts, some scratchy drawings on the strange scrap of paper. I appeared to be always fossicking to find that special tiny something for a friend that had integrity, was NZ jewellery made to gave you that warm mawkish feeling. And every year, there was a distinct shortage of Xmas decorations that meant something to us, with our love for New Zealand-made Pacific design.
I had a creative itch that needed scratching and added to that was the allure of being my private director at Mamarua. I realized I did not want to consider everything I needed to do but never actually get them done, so with help from a brilliant young illustrator and a lot of folk steering and supporting my vision, my obscure ideas of Mamarua began to turn into reality.
Beautiful hand-carved originals were finally finalised, and the method of finding an appropriate molding strategy was underway. Hugely crucial to us were the materials our fledgling business needed to be sustainable. The possibility of recycling something that might otherwise fill our precious landfills became something of a compulsion, so after lots of experimenting we found that we could get the desired effect with the utilization of recycled material. 18 months later , in October 2007, Mamaruas Mementos of the South Pacific were launched.
Electrified by our South Pacific environment, the 1st Mamarua range includes three designs Aroha, Koru and Tapa. The 3 NZ jewellery designs are offered as recycled resin mementos and pendants and recycled rubber pendants.
Mamarua to us means 2 mothers, and thats just what we are : a couple of working mummies who have pooled our skills and resources to point our creative energies in a new direction thats ours alone. Mamaruas kaupapa ( mission ) includes not only designing gorgeous mementos paying homage to our Pacific heritage, but also making them one hundred percent in Aotearoa, using all recycled materials with eco friendly packaging.
We are really proud that our mementos are made in New Zealand and employ ecologically friendly principles, proving once more that sustainability can be shocking!
